In just five steps, we’ll show you how to set up the recipe pictured above so that you too can tag and segment your GiveWP donors in ActiveCampaign.

Step 1: Create a New Recipe

From your WordPress Admin Sidebar, navigate to Automator > Add New. A pop-up window will appear where you can select your recipe type. If your GiveWP donations are not limited to logged-in WordPress users then select Everyone.

recipe type everyone

Step 2: Name Your Recipe

Give your recipe a name that makes it easy to recognize at a glance. For example, we’ve named this recipe ActiveCampagin + GiveWP Integration: Auto-Tagging based on the integrations involved.

Step 3: Configure Your Trigger(s)

In the Triggers panel, from the menu of available integrations, click on GiveWP.

From the drop-down list that appears, select A donation is made via a form.

Automator will prompt you to select your donation form. After you’ve selected the form, click Save. Your trigger should look something like this:

Step 4: Configure Your Action(s)

Because our recipe is open to anyone, we’re assuming that most donors will be new donors. As such, we’ll need two actions; one to add this new GiveWP donor to ActiveCampaign and a second action to add a tag to our newly created contact.

To set up the first action, in the Actions panel, click on Add action. From the menu of available integrations, click on ActiveCampaign. (Automator will prompt you to connect your ActiveCampaign account using your Account URL and your API key. You find that information in your ActiveCampaign account under Settings > Developer.)

After you’ve connected your ActiveCampaign account, a drop-down list will appear. Select Add a contact to ActiveCampaign.

Automator will then prompt you to enter the email address that you would like to add as a contact in ActiveCampaign. You can use tokens (i.e., dynamic pieces of data pulled from your website and from within Automator recipes) to fill out these fields. To select the GiveWP email token, click on the Asterisk then expand the list of Triggers tokens and select Email under the GiveWP trigger that we configured in the previous step.

Use tokens to fill out the remaining fields. (Note: There is a checkbox at the bottom of the window. In order to avoid creating duplicate contacts, check the box.)

Once you’re finished, click Save. Your action should look like this:

Now that we’ve added this new GiveWP donor to ActiveCampaign, we can add a tag to the contact.

Once again, in the Actions panel, click Add action and select ActiveCampaign. From the drop-down list that appears, select Add a tag to a contact.

Automator will then prompt you to select one of your existing ActiveCampaign tags. Alternatively, you can use tokens to create dynamic tags.

In the Email field, select the GiveWP email token as with the first action we configured.

Once you’re finished, click Save. Your actions should now looking something like this:

(Note: Automator actions will complete in the order in which they appear in the recipe builder. These actions are in the correct order, however, in the future you can rearrange your actions by hovering over them and using the tab on the left to rearrange them.)

Step 5: Go Live!

All that’s left for you to do now is to toggle your recipe from Draft to Live.

More GiveWP + ActiveCampaign Integrations

With Uncanny Automator, there is no limit to the GiveWP and ActiveCampaign integrations that you can come up with. Why stop at just tagging your contacts?

For example, you could automatically add big donors to an ActiveCampaign VIP list with this recipe:

And the integration works both ways. If there are members of your team that don’t have access to ActiveCampaign but still need to know some details about donors, you can create donor notes based on ActiveCampaign triggers.

Finally, Automator integrates more than 100 apps and plugins so that you can consolidate your tech stack and save costs. Try showing your VIP donors some extra appreciation with a WooCommerce coupon code and a message to your sales team to tell them about your new big donor.
